Weekly social roundup
A bit of a slow news week
I’ll admit it. The social media news was a bit quiet this week, which we all know makes me nervous and suspicious (yes, I am looking at you, Meta).
But, I’ll take it, as I am happy I don’t have to learn a new app or feature that makes me roll my eyes. Instead, I get to focus on doing more long-form content on here, explaining underused features on apps that will help you grow (!!).
And yes, a bit of news-related topics across the various platforms, like always.
Ready? Let’s get into it!

Instagram’s latest feature has arrived
Instagram Instants is here … and this is how to turn it off 😬
You know, if that’s what you want to do.
Instants was released last week (immediately after I sent out the newsletter last week, of course!), and there are a lot of mixed reactions to it. Mainly on my feed, it seems like a lot of people were annoyed. 🥴
Instants is Instagram’s take on Snapchat or BeReal, where you take a photo that is shared with your friends and disappears. It’s their way of building “authenticity” into the app.
However, once it was released, most people were sending photos accidentally and instantly (hehe), looking for a way to turn off the feature.
How to find Instagram Instants
You can find Instants inside your DMs on the lower right-hand side. The app will take you through the steps on how to create and see Instants. However, what lovely Instagram doesn’t tell you is that as soon as you hit the photo button, a photo is IMMEDIATELY taken and sent to everyone in your Friends list.
Oops.
How to turn off Instagram Instants
If this has happened to you, dear friend, here is how to turn that off for the future:
Go to your profile
Tap the hamburger menu at the top
Click “Content Preferences”
Turn on “Hide Instants in Inbox”
How to remove an Instagram Instant after it's been sent
If you don’t want to hide Instants but want to remove one that you’ve sent, you can (thank goodness!). All you have to do is hit the “undo” button after it sends. Yes, truly, it’s that easy.
Are you using Instants? Or are you avoiding it like the plague?

Top Meta news from the week

Instagram’s new Instants feature is here … and very underwhelming.
It looks like Meta is rolling out multiple different subscriptions for users to have an ad-free experience (mainly because they have to in the EU).
Instagram has released a new tool called “Magic Cut,” which will find the best part of your videos and make them into quick, short-form videos.
Just a quick FYI: Meta renamed the “engagement” metric and is now called “interactions” on every one of its platforms.
Meta Ray-Ban Display has added so many new features last week, and I am trying to tell myself I do not need them (because I don’t!). The new features include: Walking directions while you’re traveling, live captions for speech directed at you in-person or phone calls (so cool!), neural handwriting, and more.
So long, Places tab! It seems the locations feature on Instagram is slowly being removed from the app.
Instagram Stories is testing adding the progress bar at the bottom of the screen rather than the top.
Instagram seems to want to go all in on long-form content. You can now import 15-minute videos inside Edits.
The EU may make Instagram and TikTok change their design as it says it is too addictive for teens.
HUGE for those of us who use Facebook to schedule content (yes, sorry, it’s me): Facebook has updated its scheduling tools with a new calendar and bulk Reels uploading. Thank GOODNESS!
If you’re not on Threads, you might have missed everyone making fun of the new logo Threads has released. It’s definitely boring!
WhatsApp now lets users send disappearing messages … another feature taken from Snapchat. 🥱

Top TikTok news from the week

@jonahmanzano
Looks like TikTok might be stealing ideas from YouTube! You will soon be able to leave voice comments on your videos.
TikTok is looking to get into the travel space with its new TikTok GO feature. Users can book local experiences like tours, hotels, and more throughout the app.
Story Highlights (yes, like Instagram) is now available on TikTok. So your Stories can live longer than 24 hours.

Top YouTube news from the week

YouTube wants to dominate all things content and media, and its new slate of creator shows is setting that up even further.
YouTube is working on new ways to connect brands and content creators to help creators earn more partnerships (and, of course, money).
Watching YouTube and want to purchase something you see on screen? YouTube is now tagging items on screen and allowing viewers to quickly purchase from their TV. Seems bad for most people’s wallets.
YouTube is working on a new way to watch Shorts with even fewer distractions from the viewing experience. The company has started removing the likes, comments, and share features on the main screen for cleaner viewing.

Top Other news from the week
Disney is looking to get into more short-form content, especially after releasing its own version of a TikTok-style feed called “Verts.” Yes, that is the real name.
LinkedIn has released a boatload of tools to help small businesses grow on the platform.
X has created a new tab called “History” for you to access bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles easily in one spot.
And that’s all, folks!
Next week, I will be bringing you a jam-packed newsletter with trending audio back (!!), tools I have been testing out that I think are worth it, content creators to follow, and so much more.
I’m also contemplating bringing back the podcast with twice-monthly episodes about social media. Because, yes, another person with a podcast is what we all need, right?
Thanks, as always, for your support! If you like this newsletter and want to help it grow, please send to a friend, coworker, or anyone you’d think would enjoy it. It always helps!
Until next week!
Mackenzie
