Weekly social roundup
A little bit of this, a little bit of that
This week we’re all learning what the future of social media might look like, and it’s … not great?
What do I mean by that? Well, mainly that Meta has announced it will be introducing new subscription plans, and it really makes me wonder if all social media apps will soon have a monthly fee.
More about that below! Along with a bunch of other social media news you need to know this week.
Ready? Let’s go!

Meta wants you to pay for its social media apps
Last week, Meta announced it is rolling out even more subscriptions for almost every one of their apps: Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
The subscriptions are currently being tested specifically by creators and businesses.
So what are these Meta subscriptions?
Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus (both $3.99/month!) will give you access to extra features like Story rewatch counts, unlimited Story audience lists (beyond Close Friends!), the ability to spotlight a Story once a week for additional views, extend your Stories beyond 24 hours, watch Stories without showing up as a viewer, and more.
WhatsApp Plus ($2.99/month!) is all about personalization of the app. You’ll get access to new app themes, custom ringtones (bringing back 2008!!!), premium stickers, and more.
And mind you, this isn’t Meta Verified nor is it replacing Meta Verified. This is just an additional subscription to the apps.
Even more subscriptions are rolling out soon, including one for Meta AI users, and I’ll be over here keeping a watchful eye on it all.

TikTok’s road to becoming a super app?
We all know that Elon Musk has been working on making X an “everything” app, and with all the recent features TikTok has been adding to its app, it seems it could soon be a super app.
In this article from TechCrunch, they break down all the latest features that TikTok has released, including Hotel Bookings, Payments, TikTok Shop, Music, Search, and so much more. Could TikTok soon be everyone’s one-stop shop for everything in their life? Possibly…
Other reads this week:
I’ve spoken about this before, but it seems like the reality is coming to life: social media apps soon won’t be free. Well, that’s me being extreme. The reality of it seems that if you don’t want any ads, want your content seen, and want to get access to features we should already have access to, you’ll soon have to start paying for the apps you use daily.
Womp womp.

Trend this week
Get your acting chops on!!!
@tmfiorito Wow ok challenge with my good friend @rochelle
Over the past week, this trend has been absolutely everywhere on my feed:
Supportive, disappointed, sarcastic, flirty
And if you have no idea what I am talking about, I will explain it to you.
There have been many versions of this trend, but how it began was two people saying the phrase “wow, okay” in different ways: supportive, disappointed, sarcastic, and flirty.
There are now so many different versions of the phrase going around online, from “wow, okay” to “good for you” and some … spicier ones.
It’s fun. It’s easy. And a great way to break up the doom scrolling it seems we’re all doing at the moment.
And that’s all, folks!
Thanks, as always, for your support! If you like this newsletter and want to help it grow, please send to a friend, coworker, or anyone you’d think would enjoy it. It always helps!
Until next week!
Mackenzie
