Top social media news from the week

All the social media predictions for next year

Weekly social roundup

Sora and Meta and all the things!

Helllllllllo!

Hope you’re all well, and having a good start to the week???? Anyone else thinking they’ll get scammed when they’re older because of how good Sora videos are getting?

Mom, pick me up, I’m scared.

But, let’s not think too hard about that right now and get into the social media news from the week!

Attention spans are shrinking. Get proven tips on how to adapt:

Mobile attention is collapsing.

In 2018, mobile ads held attention for 3.4 seconds on average.
Today, it’s just 2.2 seconds.

That’s a 35% drop in only 7 years. And a massive challenge for marketers.

The State of Advertising 2025 shows what’s happening and how to adapt.

36 predictions for social media marketing in 2026 👀

Social Media Today has released its predictions for 2026 when it comes to social media marketing! In the past, they have been pretty spot on when it comes to predictions in the past, so I ALWAYS look forward to what they think.

Some of my favorite predictions they have for 2026?

Content created through Meta AI Smart Glasses will get a massive boost across all Meta platforms. As Meta wants people to purchase Smart Glasses, this seems to be an easy way for them to subtly promote the glasses and make others feel FOMO and purchase the glasses for themselves.

Instagram will open to the Reels tab, and not the post feed. At the moment, Instagram is testing opening the main feed to Reels. As 50% of people spend their time in the Reels tab, this could be a logical step for Instagram; however, how does it make it distinguishable from TikTok at that point?

TikTok US will officially be launched with a completely separate app from the rest of the world. Social Media Today believes the US version of the app will become less engaging, resulting in fewer users actually sticking around.

One-click shopping on Pinterest. Pinterest has struggled to make in-app shopping easy, and this is something it has been working on for years at this point. However, SMT believes Pinterest should partner with a large shopping platform (hello, Amazon) to make one-click shopping a thing.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for predictions. As I said above, there are 36 and they’re all pretty good.

What are your predictions for next year when it comes to social media? With the world ever-evolving and laws changing around it so quickly, it seems less and less predictable every year.

Who up quantifying the self?

Yes, I know I have talked about wearable technology previously, but it’s a topic I find endlessly fascinating. Because why are we trying to optimize so much of our lives? For what? For who?

Binchtopia really deep dives into Fitbits, Oura Rings, and sleep apps, why we’re so obsessed, and where the line for obsession and control comes in.

A curated list of fun things to read

My favorite read of the week

Oof. What a read. And honestly, daunting. With Sora now being widespread, it’s hard to really know what’s real and what’s fake.

Even I, someone who humblebrags that I am great at spotting AI, struggled with the videos and can’t help but fear that I will be hoodwinked in the future!

This article from NY Times breaks down AI videos, how platforms are managing and promoting AI videos, and what we can all do to stop being scammed by the fake videos floating around.

This article by The Verge is all about age verification online: from ideation to where we’re heading when it comes to verifying your age on social media.

With more and more countries implementing their own version of age verification, it truly does seem that we are in a strange era of needing to show our IDs to enter any online space.

And … is that a good thing or something we should be wary of?

And that’s all, folks!

Hope you loved it! There may or may not be a newsletter next week as I prepare for some exciting projects ahead (eee!).

Thanks, forever and always, for your support, and I’ll talk to you all soon.
