Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, shares his tips on creating Reels 🤓

This past week, Adam Mosseri went on his Stories and hosted an AMA.
One of the questions he answered, one that is on a lot of users’ minds, was: “Any tips to make my Reels perform better? Getting lower views the last couple.”
In the Story, Mosseri gave three tips on how to grow:
Organize your Reels into different groups. He talks about how he splits his content into three different categories: AMAs, Announcements, and Hidden Gems. Figure out what your categories might be based on your niche or brand.
From there, start looking out for any patterns across the videos. Do any of the groups perform better than the others? Are any of the videos sent and shared more? Are you getting more saves on another?
Once you see where your content is being interacted with, examine the data. How many likes per impression? Sends per impression? What was the watch time per person you had on each Reel? This will help you determine exactly how many people interacted with your Reel, based on the number of people who saw it on their timeline.
So yes, this all is very obvious to a lot of us!
However, it is a good reminder to go back through our analytics and really dig down on what’s working and how we can make more of the content that had worked so well before.

Top Meta news from the week

Instagram is starting to test links in posts and not in the bio. Did Mosseri go back on his original statement that this would never happen on Instagram?
Meta is updating its Community Notes. Now, you will be notified if any post you’ve interacted with previously has received a Community Note.
You will soon be able to rearrange your Instagram carousel images after you post.
Yikes. Meta is being sued by its old Head of Security, stating that WhatsApp is putting billions of users’ data at risk. Didn’t they have a recent ad campaign all about how safe and encrypted user data was? Oops.
Meta is launching new ways to make brand partnerships easier to find, search, and connect with for both brands and creators.
Facebook is rolling out group topic tags more and more. Admins of Facebook Groups can now tag posts with a specific topic to make finding related content quick and easy.
Facebook is increasing its reach for users who consistently post high-quality content. What is deemed “high-quality content”? Remains unclear.
Instagram Highlights will officially be moving into its own tab on your Instagram profile.
So long, Community Chats! Facebook is getting rid of Community Chats inside Groups.
More languages are being added to Instagram’s Voice Translations feature.
Edits is desperate to catch up with CapCut’s cutting (pun intended) edge editing with new features being released weekly.
“Shots,” Instagram’s latest feature that is exactly like BeReal, has rolled out to new countries.
An in-stream counter has been added to posts inside Threads so you can see exactly how long the thread will be.
Looks like Threads has stolen an idea from X, where when you screenshot a post, the Threads logo is added.
I’m sorry, but Meta is paying how much to train its AI chatbot?!
Instagram fixed the error that was causing less reach and views on Instagram Stories when you posted more than one a day.

Top TikTok news from the week

Did TikTok and the USA finally make a deal? It seems like a buyer has officially come forward.
Might seem surprising to some, but the fastest-growing age group on TikTok? 45+.
Creators: Your inbox just got an upgrade. You can now manage messages quickly, filter chats, and manage your notifications with a swipe.
Your TikTok profile might soon have a Timeline feed where you can view your reposted notes and videos.
Offline Watching is a new feature on TikTok, where you can save videos to scroll through later.
CapCut has released a whole new round of AI editing features.

Top YouTube news from the week

YouTube has stolen another idea from Instagram, where you can see likes from friends on the surface of a Short.
The multi-language audio feature has expanded to other countries, so now creators can upload a video in their language, and that video can be watched by others in their own native language.
Is it time to invest in YouTube ads? It seems YouTube ads have the strongest hold on teens’ purchasing power, over any other platform.

Top other social media news from the week
Snapchat now allows you to permanently save messages. Before, Snap only allowed you to save messages for 24 hours after everyone in a group viewed them or 31 days after the message was sent.

The stats say so
Is social media good for your mental health? Apparently so.

Sprout Social released its mega State of Social Media, and it’s an absolute beast.
If you have a good 10 minutes to read through the entire thing, I would highly recommend taking the time to do so.
Especially if you’re in the social media space (and I am going to guess you are, as you’re reading this lengthy newsletter of mine).
One of the most interesting sections for me was the section on personal impacts of social media, and across the board, Sprout Social’s survey respondents were more pro-social media than anti.
“Most consumers (60%) say social has had a positive effect on their mental health over the last six months, compared to only 18% who report a negative effect. More than half (53%) say it’s positively impacted their social lives, and 47% feel it’s improved their financial decisions.”
In a time where we’re being told left and right how not okay people are and the absolute detriment social media has on ourselves, on society, and on our mental health, it’s quite fascinating to hear that most people think social media is more good than bad.
I, for one, am in that camp of social media having more pros.
I’m a social media lover through and through, while also understanding the major cons of the online world we’ve built ourselves around.
However, I’ve made so many friends from Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp groups, Tumblr (back in the day!), and so many other online spaces that I am still friends with today.
I’m curious what you all think? Do you think social media is more positive? More negative? Or do you sit somewhere in between?
A curated list of fun things to read
My favorite read of the week
I. Loved. This. Piece. Holy moly.
This article from The Verge dives into how no one is anonymous anymore now that we all have smartphones and access to social media accounts.
And no, she’s not just talking about the Coldplay couple or the most viral videos out there where people get named and shamed.
The author is talking about the less viral videos where people are asking others to help them find someone, or scrolling through their feed only to discover themselves in the background of a video when someone filmed their workout class.
We’re all content now. That’s the somewhat harsh truth. And sadly, there’s not a lot we can do about it.
Trend of the week
Trend you need to jump on now
This one’s just heating up, and it’s already hilarious. It’s the perfect sound to call out something totally wrong (but said with confidence). Lip sync “you are incorrect” to the camera while your on-screen text does the heavy lifting.
How it works:
Film yourself lip-syncing the audio while text appears above, calling out the wrong information. Could be serious or totally unserious (whatever you want!).
Who the trend is best for:
Anyone with niche knowledge, myth busters, creators with a hot take.
Pro tips:
If you’ve ever wanted to politely roast a bad opinion, this is the sound for it.
